Thank you so much to all who have served BVH by being a board member!
Members -- We are always looking for input! So come on down to the Bonita Museum for a meeting and find out how you can get involved! We want to know what you want out of the club, what things you would like to see happen and where we should go!
New Website Our current site is under construction. BVH thanks Doug C. for generously hosting our previous site. Watch for the new site coming online soon!

January Membership Meeting
OLD BUSINESS:
Susan said that recruiting new members and growing the club would be one of her goals this year.
She suggested that fliers—about the upcoming meeting and announcing the program and guest speaker—be made up that can be distributed at the barns in the area. Also, these fliers and membership forms would be available at the Bonita Corral feed store. Amanda has offered to collect membership forms and dues there. Fliers should be available so all members can post them at their barns.
TREASURER’S REPORT:
Barbara was not present at this meeting but she informed Susan that the balance for the club is right about $3500.
TRAIL TRIAL OR POKER RIDE:
Janet talked to Mo Parga regarding holding a trail trial. Janet is going to contact the park regarding the availability of the pavilion. Mark reminded the Board that if we book 10 camping sites we get the pavilion free. We can add to the entries about what type of space participants would need for their trailers (pull through or back in). We only sold one site last year, out of two. It was decided to first check whether the pavilion is available before setting the date. When reserving the Pavilion, we should ask for the previous deal that if we can book 10 sites then there is no charge for use of the Pavilion. After booking the Pavilion, we can then talk to Mo and work out the details for trail trial. If we are not able to do a trail trial, we can still do a Poker Ride. Barbara will talk to Outback about catering since it has been so well received in the past. The volunteers who work will be provided with a free meal. We need a theme for the ride and then we should start thinking about advertising ASAP so that people can begin to plan ahead.
NEW BUSINESS:
January Trail Ride:
A trail ride for the club has been planned at Fiesta Island on Jan 29. Check the Calendar, which should be online soon.
Breakfast Ride:
Cindy mentioned that we have talked about a breakfast ride. Mark said there is a brand new picnic area at Morrison’s pond. The club could provide orange juice, scrambled eggs, hash browns, melon, sausage, coffee, beans, and so on. We used to charge $10 for adults on previous breakfasts. Children under 10 could be half price. Let’s look at a date, maybe in August.
Summit Park Expansion:
Ten acres of land by the swap meet was donated by the County Water Authority and is part of Summit Park. At this time the park does not know what to do with it as there is no access. Mark mentioned looking at that piece of property to have for the loop trail. The loop trail by Jamacha Road is not approved for animals. This has been an ongoing discussion with the County.
Soon To Come:
Susan is working on creating a new website for BVH. Doug Cruger had generously hosted it on his website in the past. This is no longer true. The new website will have an interactive calendar, allow photo slideshows and videos, as well as trail maps with phone app pictures. The domain name is what costs, the site is free. Susan is working with a web guy and hopefully the website will be up this month. Perhaps we can put up an “under construction” message. Susan will send a group email to let people know when it is up. We can publish the flyers for upcoming programs and also send the flyers by email to barns and other clubs for posting. The site could post the ideas from the Christmas party for speakers and other information as well.
New Wash Rack:
Mark reported that someone gave him a new metal wash rack. He is willing to donate it if we can get a work party together to install it. Mark suggested putting the wash rack at the Western Gateway staging area. He has had a discussion with the proper authorities and this could get the ball rolling to get a round pen for this staging area. This would be a very nice improvement for that area and we could use it for one of our trail rides.
Membership Cards:
Barbara O’Neil, a new member, was wondering about when the membership cards are going out. They will be going out soon. It was mentioned that perhaps Bonita Corral could hand out cards. This would have to be looked into.
Horse Right of Way:
Cindy mentioned that Betty Sousa was riding the other day and noticed while crossing Central that there is a sign that says pedestrians have the right-of-way. Mark says that area is golf course property and maintained by Chula Vista. At this point, there is nothing that can be changed. On another note, Charlie got at least 50 new signs (the triangular ones that show Right-of-Way) put up in the riverbed.
Susan was asked about the reasons for separate meetings. She explained that it was decided by the Board (also in the By-Laws) that there would be a meeting for Board members to take care of the business so members would not have to sit though the boring stuff. Immediately afterwards, a general meeting would be held consisting of a recap of the Board Meeting and then a program with guest speakers, followed by a Question-and-Answer session. This is a new format this year to try to attract more members to the general meetings. Susan and Janet introduced themselves and told a little about their backgrounds.
Susan asked the members as a group and then individually around the table “Where do you want to see the club go? What do you want out of this club? What things would you like to see happen?” She emphasized that BVH is open to all and we would like you to ask friends to join.
• Dwayne would like to see the club put pressure on the County to open the Sweetwater Reservoir trail by going to the County Meetings as a club. He mentioned that we should try to get the trails back that we have lost and get some new things.
• New member Daryl would like to find someone to ride with. Since she is leasing a horse at the Sunnyside Stock Farm where Sandy and Cindy board, they are working on arranging a time to ride.
• Andrea talked about how we are also a social club but we also need to stay proactive.
• Doug mentioned that motorized vehicles on the trails are a problem. 858-565-5200 is a direct line to the sheriff to report motorcycles.
• It was suggested that we could make a card with emergency numbers. Susan said she would try to complete that for the next meeting.
• A few members inquired about construction projects. The construction across from the Christmas tree farm was to pressure test a gas line and has been completed. The construction at the north end of the golf course is for a new 36-inch water line.
• There was discussion about what constitutes a “Fast ride” versus a “Slow ride”. The consensus was that a fast ride needs to be safe, yet that the horses could move out. A fast ride should not be on the verge of out of control or put any participant in a dangerous situation. It should be made very clear to participants what to expect in terms of speed and terrain to allow them to make an informed decision. It was suggested that the fast riders could head out first, followed by the slower riders once the first group was out of sight.
